Committee announces 2008-2009 Service-Learning Faculty Scholars /u/news/2008/04/23/committee-announces-2008-2009-service-learning-faculty-scholars/ Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:11:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/04/23/committee-announces-2008-2009-service-learning-faculty-scholars/ The Service-Learning Faculty Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the 2008-2009 Service-Learning Faculty Scholars.  Selected faculty will be developing or refining courses with service-learning components through participating in seminars throughout Fall 2008. 

The 2008-2009 Scholars are:

Cassie Kircher, English, who will be developing a service-learning creative writing course;

Sandra Reid, Human Services, who will be deepening and refining the service-learning component of a general studies course in South Africa;

Frances Ward-Johnson, Communications, who will be focusing on service-learning in the Strategic Writing course;

Beth Warner, Human Services, who will be developing a problem-based group work approach to service-learning in the Introduction to Human Services;

Alex Yap, Business, who will be focusing on service-learning as a component of the Global Experience course.

The Service-Learning Faculty Scholars Program identifies and recognizes faculty who wish to better understand service-learning pedagogy and to incorporate or enhance service-learning in their teaching. These faculty attend a series of seminars during fall semester and construct a course syllabus that includes the integration of a service-learning project. Faculty selected for the program receive a $1,000 stipend.

The accepted paper is titled “The Integrative Processing Model: A Frame work Student Learning in International Internships.” The conference is sponsored by Keimyung University, Pittsburg State University, Michigan State University and Technologico de Monterey.

Darby, faculty member in the Department of Psycholoy, and Eke, faculty member in the School of Communications, made a presentation focusing on their Winter Term 2006 course entitled, “Volunteerism and Social Justice in the Wake of Katrina.” Fair and Kiser, faculty members in the Department of Human Services, presented their research in a session entitled, “Testing the Integrative Processing Model: A Framework for Learning from Experience.” Dr. Carolyn Stuart, faculty member in the School of Education also attended the conference. Dr. Robert Bringle, internationally known expert in Service-Learning was the keynote speaker and presented throughout the day.
